With the negotiating period opening up on 14 March and the franchise tag deadline passing, things are heating up in the NFL

There’s bound to be lots of movement over the next few days with teams frantically re-signing players that they want to keep, and other players arriving on the market who have been cut.

However, it’s now possible to start getting an idea of how things will be shaping up for the 2022 season. And with teams set to go shopping, here’s a look at some of the hottest free agents that could be snapped up.

Terron Armstead

Despite being 31 heading into the 2022 season, Terron Armstead still offers fantastic potential for any team that’s lucky enough to sign him. He’s not without risk needing off-season knee surgery and with a poor injury record last season, but his sheer athleticism and speed should mean he’s still near the top of the pile.

Carlton Davies

Aged 25, Carlton Davies had a disastrous 2021 season due to a lingering quadriceps injury. He only played ten games in the regular season last year. But despite this is one of the top cornerbacks who will be available. His record speaks for itself: six interceptions and 48 passes defended in the last three years.

Tyrann Mathieu

Having played out his $42 million contract with the Chiefs, Mathieu will be looking for a final big payday. Aged 30, there’s just enough left in the tank to deliver more top-notch performances for the next team. Tied at fifth in the NFL for the most interceptions over the last three years and named in the Pro Bowl for three years running, teams will have to get in line to sign Mathieu.

Quandre Diggs

Diggs, another player decimated by injury, had an outstanding season for the Seahawks in 2021 before dislocating his ankle and fracturing his fibula in the final game. The 29-year-old is expected to make a full recovery - but it's going to take a while. Once he is fit again, he'll be one of the best playmaking safeties around.

Larry Ogunjobi

Ogunjobi's last couple of seasons on the field for Cleveland were disappointing, but the one year deal in Cincinnati saw him recapture his previous form with seven sacks, the best in his career. Still only 28 years old, the defensive tackle will undoubtedly get signed to a multi-year deal after his foot injury heals properly due to his potential as a disruptive force.

DJ Chark Jr

This wide receiver only managed four games in 2021 before his season was cut short due to a fractured ankle. However, Chark's recovery is reported to be going well, and he's expected to be fully fit by the time training is due to start. With Pro Bowl honours two years ago, Chark's powerful frame, superior ball-tracking and athleticism will make him a wanted man.

Charvarius Ward

Aged only 26, Ward is just reaching his prime and performed admirably holding up in single coverage. A boundary corner that doesn’t need back up from safety to hold their own is a rare breed, but Ward excels in this area. According to Pro Football Focus, he only missed 5% of his tackling attempts, the lowest figure for a cornerback since 2019.
